Parramatta Identity and First People

The native Darug people lived in the area before European settlement and called the area Burramatta (‘Parramatta’) which means ‘the place where the eels like down’ or ‘eel waters’.  Originally called Rose Hill by the Europeans, the name was changed in line with a colonial policy of using Aboriginal names for places already named by Indigenous Australians.  Likewise, the Parramatta Eels Rugby League team chose their club name and eel symbol to honour the local heritage of the first people.

The area was colonised in 1788, 10 months after Sydney, making it the second oldest city in Australia.  As a result, Parramatta has many heritage-listed sites that co-exist with the modern development of apartment buildings, with the area known for high-density housing.

Parramatta Suburban Features
Parramatta CBD Real Estate For Sale

Although Parramatta is well-known as a major business district, outside of the office, there is plenty to do to keep locals and visitors occupied.  The suburb is home to Australia’s 10th largest shopping centre, Westfield Parramatta.  A strategically positioned shopping centre in the heart of greater Sydney, the centre benefits from its proximity to major rail and bus connections and sizeable office workforce catering to a trade population in excess of one million residents.

Westfield Parramatta is home to some of Australia’s most loved retailers including Myer, David Jones, Target, Kmart, Woolworths and Coles.  In terms of entertainment, you’ll find an Event Cinemas Complex on-site and approximately 450 specialty stores as well as international retailers, Uniqlo and Zara.  A farmers’ market is held each Friday in nearby Church Street Mall with a wide variety of cafes, restaurants and international cuisines scattered in and around the shopping complex.

In fact, Parramatta has many restaurants, from budget to upmarket places of the establishment.  The Eat Street precinct at the northern end of Church Street is quite popular with locals who are presented with a variety of dining options to choose from.

Parramatta Park

For those who enjoy the great outdoors, Parramatta boasts over 85 hectares of grassland.  Scattered with mature trees, gardens and river frontage, the popular Parramatta Park provides an idyllic way to enjoy time away from screens in fresh air and sunshine.  The park includes a 3.2km loop cycle track, suitable for cyclists of all levels who can travel along the Parramatta River all the way to Sydney, Olympic Park.

Parramatta Park in Western Sydney, NSW

The wide green open space features historic sites, attractions, sports fields, ovals, established gardens, remnant bushland, playgrounds, memorials, monuments, waterways, wildlife, cycleways and walking tracks.  An amphitheatre known as The Crescent, hosts major concerts, music festivals and iconic events such as the Diwali festival, The Crescent Summer Series, Sydney Festival’s Symphony Under the Stars and Mother’s Day Classic.

The park is also home to Old Government House, one of 11 Australian Convict Sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Register.  The gorgeous Georgian house now operates as a museum and is open to the general public from Thursdays to Sundays.

Playgrounds

In terms of playgrounds, Parramatta Park provides two options.  Paperbark Playground in the historic Gardens Precinct is ideal for children and toddlers.  Traditional favourites like swings and a carousel are included plus it features the very latest in innovative playground equipment.  The main attraction is the ‘explorer dome’ – an interactive maze of nets, ropes, ladders and tubes to delight older children who love to climb and balance on equipment.  Soft-fall pavement covering the ground cushions any impact and there are plenty of seats for adults to use.

The other play area for kids is the Domain Creek Playground.  This park is found opposite the Queens Road Gatehouse and is spread out over a large area.  There is plenty of room to run and explore or enjoy throwing a frisbee.  It has a flying fox, slides, swings, trampolines, a water pump, sand diggers and other play equipment.  It’s easy to see why this park is popular with families.

Parramatta Park has been a ‘people’s park’ since 1858 and now receives more than 2 million visitors annually.
