Parramatta Identity and First People

The native Darug people lived in the area before European settlement and called the area Burramatta (‘Parramatta’) which means ‘the place where the eels like down’ or ‘eel waters’.  Originally called Rose Hill by the Europeans, the name was changed in line with a colonial policy of using Aboriginal names for places already named by Indigenous Australians.  Likewise, the Parramatta Eels Rugby League team chose their club name and eel symbol to honour the local heritage of the first people.

The area was colonised in 1788, 10 months after Sydney, making it the second oldest city in Australia.  As a result, Parramatta has many heritage-listed sites that co-exist with the modern development of apartment buildings, with the area known for high-density housing.

In terms of playgrounds, Parramatta Park provides two options.  Paperbark Playground in the historic Gardens Precinct is ideal for children and toddlers.  Traditional favourites like swings and a carousel are included plus it features the very latest in innovative playground equipment.  The main attraction is the ‘explorer dome’ – an interactive maze of nets, ropes, ladders and tubes to delight older children who love to climb and balance on equipment.  Soft-fall pavement covering the ground cushions any impact and there are plenty of seats for adults to use.

The other play area for kids is the Domain Creek Playground.  This park is found opposite the Queens Road Gatehouse and is spread out over a large area.  There is plenty of room to run and explore or enjoy throwing a frisbee.  It has a flying fox, slides, swings, trampolines, a water pump, sand diggers and other play equipment.  It’s easy to see why this park is popular with families.
